The Speaker of the House takes newly introduced bills and assigns them to committees that deal with the same topic. For example, if a newly introduced bill gives better retirement benefits to soldiers, the Speaker of the House will assign that bill to the Committee On Armed Services. If the Speaker of the House does not assign the bill to a committee, then the bill dies.
